My Question for Oskar Eustis about HAMILTON
At the Visual and Performing Arts Prologue yesterday at the brand-new Ent Center for the Arts at UCCS, I had the opportunity to ask Oskar Eustis, head of the Public Theatre in New York City, about his experiences with the smash-hit musical "Hamilton" (which I've kinda sorta become obsessed with). His six-minute answer covered everything from his first exposure to it in 2009 to the present day, fresh from the opening of the London production, which was produced largely in part by legendary British theatre producer Cameron Mackintosh. From a concept album inspired by Ron Chernow's biography to a show that tells about America's beginnings through the eyes of a self-made orphan immigrant, Lin-Manuel Miranda's sung- and rapped-through musical about Alexander Hamilton, something almost nobody thought could possibly work, had its world premiere at the Public Theatre on January 20th, 2015 and made its premiere on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on August 6th, 2015, playing to sold-out crowds ever since.
Kudos to Mr. Eustis and Mr. Miranda for creating such a cultural phenomenon! Fingers crossed that I get to see it very soon! But if you can't see it, at least listen to the amazing cast recording!!
