Mystery Forest - Oculus Quest
Mystery Forest VR
Double Axe Games
Oculus Quest (Through SideQuest)
An early look at the exploration and gathering adventure currently being developed for Oculus Quest.
This is a single level demo of the forthcoming game which showcases possible future combat using a bow and arrow, you can flick between a number of arrow head variations, from pointed for combat and target hitting, in this demo you are searching for hidden pumpkins, an arrow head which can be lit and fired at structures to case them to catch light and grappling arrows which allow you to climb between the floating islands.
The single level is made up of a number of floating islands, these have a similar appearance to the visuals in games such as the Windlands games and work really well in VR, they are colourful and it is easy to distinguish between items and structures even from long distances. Within the level it is possible to jump smaller gaps, but the majority will require you to shoot a grappling arrow at the closest tree and climb across using the rope. Whilst exploring you will come across different types of ore to mine, which can be smelted to help craft items, as well as fell trees and harvest fruit to eat. There are also rock faces that are climbable using a combination of your grip and jump actions they are easy to scale and allow for an even greater depth of exploration.
There are already base camps with fires scattered around the level which makes it feel a bit like a Zelda game, as you mentally set these as your targets to reach and use them to recharge your energy, you will always find food supplies surrounding them, including meat which makes me believe there will be animals roaming the lands to harvest.
So far the game is showing promising signs am I am really interested to see how it will develop, there is definite potential for a Zelda type of open world game, especially if enemy combat, boss battles are introduced that will require you to use the different types of arrow available.
