First look
This is my first look at Phantom Covert Ops and so far I am absolutely loving it. I am a big fan of the Metal Gear and Splinter Cell franchises so any opportunity to play a stealth game, especially in VR will always get my attention.
You would think that being in a kayak would be a hinderance in a stealth game, whereas, it actually adds a new dynamic and new direction for the genre and I am hoping that this is the first of many covert op games in VR.
The movement mechanics after a few seconds become second nature and you will find yourself sprinting to cover at times, risking being spotted or sitting patiently in tunnels, reeds or under footbridges waiting for the perfect moment to pass. Paddling using the two contollers feels natural, you can grip the paddle with one hand or both, whilst holding down the A button and paddling on one side will allow for quick turning.
Just because this is billed as a stealth game does not mean you have to play it like one, everything is set up for this with the silenced pistol and sniper rifle and minimal ammo. You are also equipped with an automatic rifle should things go south or you wish to take the more aggressive approach.
The games visuals are suitably dark with plenty of shadows, tunnels and reeds to allow you to find good cover. The first levels feels like an old flooded base with plenty of look out towers and footbridges all very industrial.
During each mission there are additional side missions and secrets, such as destroying radios or taking out wanted targets, again you don't have to risk your cover but completing these missions but they will add to your overall ranking, as will successfully causing a distraction. Getting spotted or shooting any enemies which are not on the wanted list will deduct from your ranking.
Can't wait to go back in.
