Now here's an interesting bit of gaming history! See that giant prop? It's what used to be called a "touch-tone telephone". Crazy, I know.

Nakayama Miho no Tokimeki High School (Miho Nakayama's Heatbeat High School) is a 1987 dating sim starring then-17-year-old singer, actress and model Miho Nakayama, one of the most popular Japanese idol's of the time.

The game was among the very first dating sims ever, and was bizarrely co-developed by Squaresoft and Nintendo R&D1.

The project lead was Square's Hironobu Sakaguchi (creator of Final Fantasy), and the designer was Nintendo's Yoshio Sakamoto (creator of Metroid, Kid Icarus, Balloon Fight, WarioWare, and others). This dating sim got an original soundtrack by Nobuo Uematsu and Toshiaki Imai.

Another of several games to use the superior blue disks, this game also took advantage of the disk kiosks where players who completed the game could submit their saves and personal information for a chance to win prizes related to the idol Nakayama Miho.

One novel innovation at the time was the inclusion of a real-world phone number where Japanese players could call and hear pre-recorded skits from the game, hints on how to solve various situations in the game, and hear a fourth-wall breaking personal message to the players voiced by Nakayama herself. The service was short lived as it was expensive to maintain and the phoned thousands of time per day.

If you've ever played anything even vaguely resembling a dating sim, you owe this game a debt of gratitude.
