The nanites swap targets 100 times per second, and turn red. This leads to interesting, emergent effects. P.S. I believe the "heartbeat" or quick "growth bump" effect comes from a drop in frame rate, as it adds a little bit of inconsistency in the physics. The same effect happens when I press "space" to force slow down, although I do not show it in this video.
