Nemo, 1990 Capcom
Based on the anime film released in Japan in 1989, Little Nemo: Adventures In Slumberland (which in turn was loosely based on the old US comic strip from the early 1900s), this is otherwise kind of your typical Capcom scrolling platform adventure with the usual great Capcom music, graphics and action. With solo play you control the pajama-clad boy Little Nemo and the 2nd player controls a clown named Flip. Your main goal is to defeat the Nightmare King and save King Morpheus and his princess daughter (and in turn, save the Slumberland Kingdom). You must traverse 7 rounds to reach the final boss and there is a boss at the end of each round. The graphics are quite lovely and feature life-size toys quite prominently. You can often find objects to throw at enemies or bosses like crates or barrels, and with the latter you can roll it through multiple enemies. You can also "butt stomp" some lesser enemies and accrue increasing bonuses for landing on more and more enemies in a row. Nemo has a scepter as a weapon, and Flip has a cane; you can upgrade these weapons to zap a whole group of enemies at once or increase the range or power of your attack. Various Capcom icons make cameo appearances here, from games like SIDE ARMS, AREA 88/UN SQUADRON, the Yashichi from a bajillion Capcom games, etc. Lovely music and graphics and solid gameplay make this worth checking out, even if you don't know anything about Little Nemo (I myself had to do some research).
