NES Alphanumeric! #004: HUDSON'S ADVENTURE ISLAND™

I'm working my way through my personal collection in alphanumeric order, from 3-D WORLDRUNNER to ZEN THE INTERGALACTIC NINJA!
THOUGHTS POST-STREAM: I was surprised at how good this is; I can see why the series is so well-loved. The platforming is challenging and excellent, although the level designs are not as varied as they could be. The controls are great and I love the way the levels scroll vertically and horizontally as you progress. It's not Super Mario Bros., but it shares some similarities. It's kind of mean at times (those damn boulders!), and it's bizarre that the continue feature is hidden: You have to find the Hudson Bee in Area 1 *and* know that you have to press RIGHT and START on Game Over. Yes, it's mentioned in the manual, and it's great you can continue at all, but continuing feels kind of essential. (And as I mentioned in the video, the cheat card from Funcoland gives the wrong information about it). Still, I find myself really wanting to play this one through to the end soon, and looking forward to finally trying out the sequels.
