7The 2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe is the plug-in hybrid version of the iconic Jeep Wrangler SUV. This is the most fuel efficient Wrangler yet, with an EPA estimated 49 MPGe when running on electric power alone. It retains the Wrangler's legendary off-road capabilities while adding the benefits of electric torque and gas savings.
Power comes from a 2 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors, providing a total system output of 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. This gives the 4xe strong acceleration and allows it to tow up to 3,500 pounds. Electric-only driving range is estimated at 21 miles from the 17 kWh battery pack. Charging can be done at home or at public charging stations.
The 4xe uses the same body-on-frame construction and solid front and rear axles as gasoline Wranglers, providing excellent articulation and ground clearance. Four-wheel drive systems include full-time 4WD, part-time 4WD with low range gearing, and a Selec-Trac two-speed transfer case. The Wrangler's prowess over rocks, ruts, mud, and sand remains intact.
Inside, the cabin layout is familiar Wrangler but with available luxury features like leather seats, a larger touchscreen, and a premium Alpine audio system. The hybrid powertrain is seamlessly integrated, with driver-selectable modes to optimize electric operation. Cargo room is slightly reduced from gas models but still provides plenty of utility.
Fuel economy and emissions reductions are the biggest improvements. Electric operation enables Silent Driving around town. Estimated MPG is 49 city/47 highway/48 combined when in hybrid mode, far better than the gas V6. Plus there are significant tax incentives and potential HOV lane access in some states.
Pricing starts at around $55,000 for the two-door model, and $58,000 for the Unlimited four-door version. That's a significant premium over non-hybrid variants, but the 4xe also qualifies for a $7,500 federal tax credit to help offset the cost. The unique hybrid also commands a near-$10k premium in the used market.
The 2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe retains the fun, freedom, and capability Wrangler is known for while benefiting from hybrid technology. For Jeep fans seeking improved efficiency without sacrificing performance or off-road talent, it's a compelling package. The plug-in hybrid powertrain enhances the appeal of an already iconic SUV.
