New Super Mario Bros. playthrough

After 14 years, Mario had returned in the starring role in a 2D platformer. It had been a long time and the break was perhaps a good idea. Nintendo didn’t want to burn the guy out by repeating the same thing and the 3D era was upon us. After Mario 64 had changed the series and Mario Sunshine had left gamers with a furrowed brow by going too far with some of the concepts, it was time for a return.
Nintendo achieved this by taking some ideas and concepts from later Mario games and transplanting them into the 2D Mario world to keep it fresh. Even with all of that, though, New Super Mario Bros. channels the spirit of the original Super Mario Bros. most of all. It feels very bare bones and back to basics. There are unique boss fights rather than the koopa kids and Bowser Jr. is a constant presence in the forts leading up to them. There aren’t many new enemies here and the levels are often short and punchy.
The gameplay, overall, is very strong, but some of the jump physics feel a little off at times. It’s a slippery, loose feeling that can cause unintentional damage and deaths if the gamer isn’t careful. Maybe that was by design, but it is frustrating in some of the later stages. The visuals are bright and cheerful and so is the music, which weaves in familiar motifs into the new tunes.
The only other demerit is, apart from a few stages here and there, this game is pretty light in terms of difficulty. This isn’t a complete throwback to the original, which punished gamers for mistakes. This is a much gentler entry to the franchise by comparison, which was likely the designers’ intent because of the Nintendo DS acting as an entry point for younger gamers. Fair enough, but a little more bite would have been nice. It’s still Mario and it’s still a first-rate title, which is what we’ve come to expect.
