Mario Kart Super Circuit’s best move is sticking to the original Mario Kart for the SNES as its model and guide. Some might call it a glorified SNES version (and including the original 20 tracks as an unlockable adds weight to that idea), but so what? If you’re going to steal, steal from the best. While there are a few ideas taken from the N64 game such as triple shells and the like, the game largely hews to the SNES game with some modest updates here and there. There is more interactivity in the levels with moving obstacles and things in the background causing potential trouble. The AI is smarter and more aggressive, as well. Overall, though, this feels and plays very much like a clone of the SNES version. That’s very much to its credit. The courses are engaging, tight and demand precision from the player. You have to be on your toes and there are plenty of obstacles around to cause problems. From time to time, it does get to be a bit much and a few courses feel like SNES courses with a new coat of paint. Overall, though, this is a winning and engaging title that does a superb job keeping the spirit of the best Mario Kart game in the franchise alive.
