1992, NES. Rating: 1.5 out of 4 stars

Given the namesake, it’s a given there will be some quality in a Tecmo game. It doesn’t come anywhere close to the realm of football, but the general feel and tone are replicated and there are some good times, but they are few and far between. The problem with Tecmo NBA Basketball is it feels like they tried cramming way too much into the game. Basketball is a fast-paced and chaotic game at times and their attempts to replicate it lead to confusion for the gamer. It’s hard to tell where the ball is sometimes and it can lead to unforced errors. Fouls feel like they’re done randomly and offensive charging is way too common. Shooting and passing are frustrating at times, as well, with no rhyme or reason on why things happen. Sometimes the game works despite all that and there is some decent depth with the in-season mode, but there’s not enough to make this game work the way it should. Having actual NBA rosters is nice and there is a nostalgia factor, but it ultimately doesn’t work.
