New Super Mario Land (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthough of New Super Mario Land for the Super Nintendo.
Released a bit over a week ago, New Super Mario Land is a brand new remake of the 1989 Game Boy classic Super Mario Land, done in the style of the 2006 DS game New Super Mario Bros. Created from the ground up for the SNES, the game's code base is entirely original (read: it's not a rom hack), and the 16 megabit rom runs perfectly on both original hardware and emulators.
The creator, M. Nagler as he lists himself in the game's end credits scroll, has kept quiet about the title, apparently fearing some sort of legal reprisal from Nintendo. I can't say that I blame him, given Nintendo's track record for issuing C&Ds to fan projects. It's an extremely impressive piece of work. The graphics look like they come directly from a DS game - they're all made of prerendered sprites created from actual 3D models - and there are a lot of neat tricks being pulled with the hardware to create effects like transparent wavy water, heat distortion, and even fully flowing waterfalls, all while maintaining a generally solid framerate.
But its most impressive achievement? If you plug in a multi-tap, it supports 4-player simultaneous co-op play, just like on the Wii! I played it as a single-player game, but I left the game's auto-play demo run after the ending finishes so you could see what 4P mode looks like in action.
It's clear from the unbelievable amount of effort that's been invested here that someone really loved Super Mario Land. Even with the updated control scheme and the slight mechanical adjustments, it's entirely faithful to the 1989 Game Boy game. I loved it!
M. Nagler, who ever you are, thanks so much for making this!
I've since played the updated version (rev. 1.5) which improves pretty much every aspect of the game:
