NieR:Automata: Game of the YorHa Edition - Debug Mode
On this day 5 years ago, the PC version of 'Nier: Automata' was released. To think that this joint collaboration between Square Enix and PlatinumGames would become such an icon after all these years...
If anything, this was the game that not only served as my gateway entry to the world of Steam games (having only played browser-based games and certain non-Steam PC games up until that point), but also led me to enjoying single-player story-driven games in general (having only been interested in fighting games and racing games up until that point). I started playing this video game shortly after its PC release date and finished its entire story - multiple canon endings and all - months later, and all this was done on an extremely outdated non-gaming laptop which was actually lent to me on a whim. Needless to say it was quite the experience at the time, but then again, as far as I'm concerned, the PC version of 'NieR:Automata' had its fair share of graphical and technical issues (which were later patched just last year, at least for the most part).
Where do I even start with this game? Prior to my experience with this action RPG, I had never experienced a video game story which not only possessed awesome gameplay, but also played around with entire genres (and at times the fourth wall). And speaking of story, boy did this game hit me right in the feels (in ways which I never experienced prior to that point). Also, who would've that this game's main protagonist, YorHa No. 2 Type B (2B for short), would become such an iconic video game character that she would join alongside the likes of Ryu from Capcom's 'Street Fighter' series and Terry Bogard from SNK's 'Fatal Fury' franchise in the pantheon of video game crossover history? So yeah, 'NieR:Automata' certainly isn't perfect, but I do consider it to be an epic masterpiece overall, and the word "masterpiece" isn't something that I usually like to throw around on a whim. (After all, it practically inspired a whole bunch of games which would come after this one, including but not limited to 'Astral Chain', 'Genshin Impact' and 'Punishing: Gray Raven', just to name a few.)
Oh, and by the way, this game's Debug Room can be accessed after completing the game three times (and subsequently saving the game). Want to practice against enemies at an extremely high level? Want to change up the battle BGM for more intense fights? Want to know what it feels like to fight against a multitude of enemies while being handicapped to some degree? This particular mode covers all that (and then some).
