Ninja Gaiden 4 is introducing a flexible difficulty system with tiered modes, customizable assist features, and a notoriously brutal, post-game Master Ninja difficulty for series veterans. This was detailed by developers Team Ninja and PlatinumGames during the Tokyo Game Show 2025.

The new approach aims to balance the franchise's legendary difficulty with increased accessibility for newcomers.

In a new video, global project manager Joe Muntal outlined the assist options available in Hero Mode, including auto guard, auto dodge, auto heal, and more.

An easy mode for new players, featuring automatic assists like auto-guard, auto-dodge, and auto-heal. These can be turned on or off at any time, allowing players to learn and grow at their own pace without penalty.

These standard difficulty settings can be freely adjusted mid-game. This gives players the flexibility to increase the challenge as their skills improve or decrease it if they hit a wall.

Once selected, players can’t swap off it mid-game. Enemies are far more aggressive, not waiting for their turn and attacking Yakumo at every opportunity. Mastering your skills and timing is critical for success, so it’s a good thing there’s a standalone Training Mode for brushing up on everything.

For players who want to fine-tune their experience, individual assists like auto-dodge can be enabled or disabled, even on Normal or Hard difficulties.
