First things first, Ninja Gaiden II features several changes to the gameplay and how spirit points work. You gain spirit points quicker, but you now have a set maximum which can be increased throughout the game and special attacks use up more spirit points on average.
The controls: now Ryu can climb up and down walls at will, unlike where you had to repeatedly jump up the wall in the first Ninja Gaiden.
However, this game still has the same frustration features of the first, knockback and unfair enemy respawning subroutines.
