REVIEW:
The game starts with you playing as Akul’s brother Shiro in a prologue. You are told that Akul has been kidnapped and that you must bring the sacred scrolls if you want him to live. You are doomed to die in this prologue, because you are on a train when a bomb detonates. After this Akul’s sensei brings Akul the bad news. It is known that is was the Gunshi Clan, an opium mafia, that set up the trap for Shiro, and Akul now seeks revenge and wants to bring the scrolls back.

This is a nice introduction to the game and there is a good amount of pictures before and after the playable prologue to supply the story.

When the game starts you have a map where you can select which stage you want to play, and when a stage is completed you will return to the map, so you can select another stage. A stage is not necessarily completed because you have went through it and have returned to the map, because when you complete a stage you can choose between four different power ups, and these powers will make it possible for you to reach areas in the stages you could not reach before. Your standard weapon is a sword, but it is also possible to collect shurikens.

There is five stages on the map, and you can choose between the four of them, the fifth will only be available when you have completed the others 100%. It is possible to leave a stage again at the beginning, if you for some reason should want to do that.

The game is huge and you will have to make your way through parks, trees, outside of buildings, inside of buildings, graveyards, a submarine, dungeons and lots of other cool backgrounds. To complete a stage you have to find the scroll and defeat the boss. Completing the four selectable stages this way makes the fifth stage selectable from the map. On the final stage you have to find a key instead of a scroll, and making your way to the final boss on this stage is not easy, because all of the four other bosses you have already defeated seeks revenge, so you will have to defeat them again on this stage!

This game plays really good, the controls are good – the use of the power ups is simple and works fine; for the double jump just keep holding down the jump button, and for running fast just hold down the hit button. Nice menu and in game music, good prologue and storyline, and an end of game sequence. There is a little color clash here and there, but not enough to be annoying for the gameplay, and the gameplay is very good, because you have to figure out what you have missed in the stages and where to use the power ups you get.

This is a solid platform game for the 128k that you should not miss!

Rating = 90%
