SNK의 대전 액션 게임 사무라이 스피리츠 시리즈의 5번째 3D 작품. 사무라이 스피리츠 섬 이후 10년 만에 발표된 신작이다.

플랫폼은 PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC(에픽스토어)로 PS4와 XB1 콘솔은 6월 25일 발매, 아케이드는 동년 10월 24일 가동, 닌텐도 스위치 일본어/한국어판은 동년 12월 12일, 유럽/북미판은 2020년 2월 25일 발매됐다. 중국 플스판은 2020년 5월 1일 발매 되었다.

PC판의 경우 출시 초기에 보도 자료를 통해 출시를 알렸지만 2019년 12월을 지나 2020년 2월 29일이 끝날 때 까지 출시 소식을 밝히지 않아 PC판 출시일이 불투명해졌으나, 2020년 3월 23일 에픽게임즈에서 보도자료를 통해 봄 중에 에픽게임즈 스토어를 통해 출시될 것이라고 밝혔다. 그리고 2020년 6월 12일 사무라이 쇼다운 네오지오 컬렉션과 동시에 발매되었다.

초대작부터의 전통을 따라 수출판은 사무라이 쇼다운(SAMURAI SHODOWN)[4]으로 발매되며, 한국도 수출판 제목으로 정발된다. 내수판은 원 제목인 사무라이 스피리츠를 영문 대문자로 적은 SAMURAI SPIRITS로 표기한다.

전 기종 한국어를 정식 지원하며, PS4/XB1판 국내 유통은 인트라게임즈에서 담당한다.

약칭/별칭은 국내에서는 그냥 사쇼라고 하거나 킹황갓과 비슷한 검황갓으로 부르며, 일본에서는 레이와 시대의 첫 사무라이 스피리츠 시리즈라는 뜻으로 令サム(레이사무), 또는 2019년에 나온 작품이라고 19サム(19사무)라고 부른다. 이중 레이사무는 SNK 관계자가 언급함으로서 반쯤 공식 명칭이 되었다.

사무라이 스피리츠 제로와 사무라이 스피리츠 1편의 사이의 이야기라고 공식 발표되었다. 세계관 및 설정은 기존 시리즈에 맞춰져 있으며, 그에 따라 아마쿠사, 미즈키, 잔쿠로는 불참하고 시키는 괴제 유가의 지배를 완벽히 받기 전이라 등 뒤의 문신이 미완성인 상태로 등장한다. 그나마 잔쿠로는 시즈마루의 엔딩 실루엣에서 등장. DLC로 등장하는 쿠비키리 바사라는 제로에서 타임슬립했다는 설정이 유지되었다.
2019년 4월 5일 티저 사이트가 공식 사이트로 개편됐다. 한국어, 영어 페이지 등도 제공하지만 캐릭터 정보나 시스템 소개 등에 대해서는 일본어 페이지에서만 다루고 있어 한국어, 영어 페이지에서의 상세 정보 등은 추후 공개될 것으로 보인다.

그래픽이 3D로 일신되었지만 스트리트 파이터 시리즈, 더 킹 오브 파이터즈 시리즈 처럼 기본적인 대전 시스템은 2D 격투게임 방식을 따른다. 그리고 본가 시리즈 정통을 따라서 SAMURAI SHODOWN도 짝수편에 해당하기 때문에 전작의 홀수편에 해당하는 천검의 시스템을 보완 및 밸런스에 문제되는 시스템을 삭제하는 방향과 사람 대 사람의 PVP 대전을 중시하는 밸런싱을 강조하였다.

제목에 부제가 붙어있지 않아 리부트로 추측하던 의견들이 있었는데, 공식 사이트가 개편되면서 시리즈 포털 사이트와 일어 공식 사이트의 소개문에 완전신작(完全新作)이라는 표현을 사용했고, 한국어 사이트에서는 완전신작이라는 표현 외에도 "사무라이 리부트(SAMURAI REBOOT)"라는 표현을 사용하고 있다. 스토리 및 설정이 기존 작품을 따라감에 따라, 여기서 리부트라는 단어는 일반적으로 사용하는 '설정, 스토리를 갈아엎고 다시 시작한다.'라는 의미가 아닌, '오랫동안 멈춰있던 시리즈를 다시 시작한다.'라는 의미로 보아야 한다.


스토리

히노와의 대란에서 1년이 지난 텐메이 7년(1787년), 다누마 오키쓰구 원로가 실각되고, 마츠다이라 사다노부가 신임 원로로 취임된다. 사다노부는 간세이 개혁을 추진한다.
일본 각지에선 기근, 화재, 민란 등이 창궐했으며 이러한 부정적인 기운이 '암운'으로 구체화되어 일본 열도를 휩쓸었다. 이 암운을 감지한 검객들이 각자의 사유를 가지고 떠돌면서 암운이 뿜어져 나오는 중심부를 향해 간다.

Samurai Shodown (known as Samurai Spirits in Japan) is a 2019 fighting game developed and published by SNK for arcades, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Stadia, Xbox Series X/S and Windows as an entry in the Samurai Shodown series.


Gameplay

Samurai Shodown is a 3D fighting game with a 2D plane combat system that uses many elements from past games in the series. It shares similarities with The King of Fighters XIV and SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy.

The controls consists of four buttons: weak, medium, strong blows with weapons and kick. By pressing special combinations, the character can carry out captures, counterattacks, interceptions and evasions. The Rage Gauge is back in the game. It replenishes after each damage taken by the character. A fully filled scale gives access to new abilities. After gaining a full scale, the player can activate the rage mode, which increases the character's strength for a while and opens up the opportunity to inflict a disarming blow to the opponent. During the activation of the fury mode, an explosion occurs, pushing the enemy away and opening him up for attack. After the end of the rage mode, the player is deprived of the opportunity to use the scale until the end of the match.

Each character has a Super Special Move, which deals very powerful damage when hitting an opponent. However, it can only be attempted once during the entire match.

The game uses a trainable artificial intelligence. The player can create his own so-called ghost. The AI will observe the player's actions and then try to copy them. In a battle with your own ghost, the player can discover the weaknesses of his tactics.

The bloody finishing moves that were absent in the previous titles of the series returned to this game.


Plot​

Samurai Shodown takes place between the events of the 1993 game and Samurai Shodown V and has been cited as a reboot of the series.

The game takes place in 1787, during the Tenmei Era of Japanese history. The entire country is beset by a terrible and looming evil. Fire, ruin and famine ran rampant throughout Japan. Meanwhile, as these events unfold, a sinister cloud envelops the air with a foreboding sense of dread. Shizuka Gozen, the deceased spirit of a young woman who is possessed and trapped in Yomi, (labeled Eternity in the game itself) threatens to destroy Japan. Warriors from all across Japan and beyond the ocean, driven by their own needs and desires, converge to investigate these evil forces and vanquish them.
