Nordic Mythology Meets Strategy Game - What is Northgard?
3Northgard is a strategy game in a nordic mythic setting.
You control a nordic clan and try to outshine the other clans either by military strength, superior trade, superior knowledge or collecting the most fame.
You have 13 different clans available, 6 included in the base game the other seven as DLCs. These clans have all a different/unique playstyle. In this video I play with Eikthyrnir, the Clan of the Stag.
Northgard offers various modes for both singleplayer and multiplayer. There is a campaign, skirmish battles, a conquest mode, where you can face several challenges for each clan.
In a skirmish game you start with a townhall and 4 villagers. In order to grow your clan you have to scout new territories, gather food, wood, kröwns (money) and lore (research).
You can only build in a territory after colonising it, what you spend additional food for. During winter your food production will suffer and you villagers need more firewood, what makes it an additional challenge.
Other than the opposite clan(s) you will also discover wildlife, mythical creatures and neutral factions on the map. In addition regularly events are triggered like earth quakes, spectral warriors attacking or a kraken endangering your shore line.
The military is controlled like in a RTS, but it is small scale, so you will not have a lot of units, what makes every single unit more important. The military follows the principle of stones, scissors and paper. You have warriors, axe throwers and shield bearer as standard units. Clan specific you can have additional units and every clan has a specific "hero" unit like the clan of the stag has the warchief.
I consider Northgard quite a unique game, because it is hard for me to find a proper game to compare it to. It has the slow peaceful build up in the beginning, almost like The Settlers. It has the territories like e.g. Empire Earth 2 or Humankind have them. It has the direct military control like a classic RTS. So somehow it is hard to put a label on it.
By playing the game you also fulfil achievements that give you some of the ingame currency with which one can buy optic customisations.
There also daily and weekly tasks and specific events for that.
