Ten thousand tons of special sand was shipped from the Netherlands and deposited in Brighton Marina, in South East England so that 60 artists from all over the world can recreate the wonders of Ancient Egypt.

The highlight of the festival would be a 50ft-high pyramid. Sphinxes, mummies, temples, Rameses II and Tutankhamun himself will all be sculpted in what promises to be an amazing exhibition of craft and skill. Adding water to the sand compacts the grains together and that is how the sculptures keep their shape.

The Sand Sculpture Festival started out about 30 years ago as a carving contest on a beach in Scheveningen, near The Hague, in the Netherlands. Since then it has been taken all around Europe, as well as to China and Israel.
