Nvidia's NEW UPSAMPLING Changes Everything | DLSS & Nvidia Image Scaling Analysis
Since the launch of the RTX 20 series of graphics cards, Nvidia has been pushing two major technologies - DLSS (deep learning super sampling) and ray tracing. Now, in the closing weeks of 2021, DLSS has been adopted in to well over 100 games, available as plugins for Unreal Engine and other popular game engines.
But, for a number of years before the release of DLSS, Nvidia did have another upsampling option known as Sharpening. This was a driver toggle, enabling virtually any game to benefit from upsampling - so, you could play any game at say 1080P and upsample to 1440P using a variation of Lanczos.
In an effort to thawart the good PR AMD has recieved with FSR, Nvidia is giving Sharpening a face lift, with NIS (Nvidia Image Scaler), which again, is still a driver wide toggle, but with additional controls - including being now part of GeForce experience.
Further to their NIS announcements, Nvidia is pushing DLSS 2.3, which has numerous improvements and enhancements over the older release. It improves usage of data from motion vectors, fixing some visual issues with Cyberpunk 2077 for example.
In this video, we'll go over the Nvidia announcement and discuss NIS, and how Nvidia views Spatial Upscalers versus its own Deep Learning Super Sampling technology, as DLSS is indeed a temporal upsampler, using a neural network.
