The phase 1 is basically a setup for phase 2.
In phase 1 you want to make him go far up so you can shoot a beam and 6 missiles. No more than that. Now he only is 1 missile away from phase 2.
Next you want him to go far up again so you can attack him from the lower part. Once you release the beam, he will enter in phase 2, making him go down slooooowly slowly giving you time to smash the B button into him. You should stop when you are from 7 to 9 missiles because he will go to phase 3.
Then you have the leftovers to help in the last phase, which truly is a nightmare.

The visual cue i use to fire nightmare from below is the line at the ground. Make sure to go a little step further to the right when going to phase 2 because he will go to the right a bit, and you will tink a few missiles before realising it. Also be sure you don't pseudo screw his core before phase 2 or the strat will fuck up
