I think I had some words about brush powers I neglected to say. I've always thought drawing symbols for magic is kinda neat, almost as if you're performing the magic yourself, but it doesn't usually work that well. Here, by keeping the symbols simple or not even symbols based in the case of all the elemental manipulations, they seem to have also made them more reliable.
I've talked before about how constant brush techniques can break up the action, but they don't do it any worse than, say, Secret of Mana's magic. I do kinda wish there was a "repeat last technique on closest target(s)" button, but, well, it's not needed for the game to work.
