Anyway, Japanese fact:
The nine-tailed fox has a complicated background.
Sometimes it is considered a good and holy being, other times it is considered sinister and evil... That's possibly why Ninetails in this game pretends to be a god by hiding in a constellation and has the first half of the battle in that golden godly arena (which is all just an illusion).
In general, as kitsune age/get more power they grow new tails. The maximum number of tails they can grow is nine. Once they grow their ninth tail, their fur color changes to gold or white and they gain incredible god-like powers. In some stories they even become a divine creature (known as a Tenko- not to be confused with Tengu which is what Shiftry from Pokemon is heh) and ascend to Heaven.
