One-Minute Game Review | DOOM: The Dark Ages
It doesn’t seem to matter how storied and established this franchise is. The developers just aren’t afraid to make pretty drastic changes to the core gameplay. The question is, did they mess things up with this newest game? Today’s one-minute game review is on Doom: The Dark Ages.

First, let’s talk about the Shield Saw. Combat here almost completely revolves around this new tool.
You use it defensively to block and parry attacks. But you also use it offensively.
Bashing into enemies allows you to quickly get up-close and personal, but if you prefer to keep your distance, it can also be used as a projectile.
Additionally, it’s the key to certain traversal challenges and puzzles. Personally, I think it’s super fun to use.
What’s not so fun are some of the other new additions. Namely, mech battles and dragon mounts.
Flying around is great, but the dragon combat is insanely single-note.
The giant mech suits are a little better, but their fighting mechanics are NOTHING compared to the on-foot combat.
Thankfully, dragon and mech missions are infrequent. The majority of the game is the good stuff: high-octane demon slaying.
Battles do eventually start to feel a little samey but it never stops being fun. And the boss fights at the very end were my absolute favorite parts of the games.
There are an oddly large amount of cutscenes, and most aren’t great, but they can totally be skipped if an adrenaline rush is all you’re looking for.
It’s cool that they’re taking risks and not just letting Doom become stale.
Not every new addition here hits–but The Dark Ages is still an amazingly fun, visceral action game. An easy recommendation!
