On this day, Rasputin was murdered. On December 30, 1916, Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin was killed by a group of Russian nobles in St. Petersburg. Rasputin was a mysterious faith healer and mystic from Siberia who was hired by Czar Nicholas II and his wife Alexandra to treat their son Alexei, who suffered from hemophilia. He soon became the not-so secret lover of Alexandra, and when Czar Nicholas went off to oversee Russia’s army in World War I and left Alexandra in charge of the palace, he displayed a degree of control over her that frightened many nobles. As Russia’s losses in the war mounted, Alexandra and Rasputin became deeply unpopular, and on December 30, a group of nobles led by Prince Felix Yusupov decided to take action. According to legend, Rasputin’s assailants poisoned him twice, shot him three times when the poisoning failed, and then dumped his body into the Malaya Nevka river.
