On this day, a great scientist departed on a journey that inspired his most important theory. On December 27, 1831, Charles Darwin embarked on a journey aboard the HMS Beagle to chart the coast of South America and study its geology. At the time, Darwin was fresh out of college and was employed as the ship’s naturalist, tasked with studying the animal and human life that the Beagle encountered along. Over the next five years, Darwin explored the coast of South America and made many important observations, but his most important breakthrough came in the Galapagos islands, when he realized that many of the unique animals present on the islands were likely descended from older species on the South American mainland. This realization formed the basis for his theory of evolution and forever changed mankind’s understanding of the natural world.
