On this day, a New Year’s tradition was inaugurated in New York City. On December 31, 1907, New Yorkers counted down to the New Year with the dropping of a large, illuminated ball in Times Square for the first time. The celebration was the brainchild of Adolph Ochs, the owner of the New York Times, and the first primitive ball was designed by Artkraft Strauss and was made of iron and wood with 100 incandescent light bulbs. Since then, the Times Square Ball Drop has been repeated every year with the exception of the war blackout years of 1942-43, although the ball itself has gone through five increasingly large and complex iterations. Starting in the late 40s, the festivities in Times Square began to be televised, and the event went from a New York tradition to a New Years tradition all across America, with millions tuning in every year to watch the concerts and ceremonies surrounding the countdown to a brand new year.
