On this day, a brilliant composer whose music inspired a nation was born. On December 8, 1865, Jean Sibelius was born in the Finnish city of Hämeenlinna, then a part of the Russian Empire. Sibelius showed a lot of musical talent from a young age, and although he initially went to college to be a lawyer, he soon switched over to music instead and began to cultivate a style that could be described as uniquely Finnish. Sibelius’ musical nationalism came at an opportune time, as the Finnish struggle for independence from Russia was rapidly coming to a head, and his music helped to establish and legitimize the Finnish cultural identity. To this day, Sibelius’ tone poem Finlandia remains the national anthem of Finland, but he produced a great deal of other excellent music, with his seven masterfully orchestrated symphonies being especially worth a listen in my opinion!
