On this day, a computer science pioneer gave the mother of all demos. On December 9, 1968, Douglas Engelbart demonstrated a complete computer hardware and software system called the oN-Line System, or NLS, at a conference in San Francisco. Known as the Mother of All Demos, Engelbart’s 90 minute presentation gave the public their first view of many fundamental aspects of modern computing, including hypertext, graphics, the computer mouse, multiple windows, and even collaborative real-time text editing. Engelbart was a visionary who believed that the computer could be used for far more than just complex number crunching, and his NLS showed an early vision of a complete, integrated system which Engelbart believed could augment human intelligence. His legendary demo of the NLS would go on to inspire the Personal Computer Revolution of the 70s and 80s, although whether computers have actually made us more intelligent is definitely up for debate.
