On this day, a king gave up his throne for the sake of love. On December 10, 1936, Edward VIII of the United Kingdom formally abdicated after only 326 days as king. The main cause of Edward’s abdication was his affair with Wallis Simpson, an American socialite who had already been divorced once and who was currently in the process of divorcing her second husband as well. When Edward informed Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin of his intention to marry Simpson, Baldwin informed him that the Church of England forbade remarrying after divorce, and that if he did such a thing, the British government would likely resign en masse. Edward refused to give up Wallis Simpson, and so, in the presence of his three younger brothers at Fort Belvedere, he gave up the throne instead. His brother Prince Albert succeeded him as King George VI, and Edward and Wallis married the following year. Somewhat surprisingly, they stayed together for life!
