On this day, a man with nothing left to lose stole a tank and went on a rampage down busy city streets. On May 17, 1995 35-year-old Army veteran Shawn Nelson broke into a poorly guarded California National Guard base, stole an M60A3 tank, and proceeded to drive it down the streets of San Diego, causing as much property damage as possible along the way. Nelson had suffered from a series of romantic and professional setbacks as well as many years of drug addiction when he broke into the National Guard Base around 6:45 PM, stole the tank, and set off. Nelson drove for six miles and crushed 40 cars as well as a large number of traffic lights, utility poles, and fire hydrants, although he managed to avoid harming any people. His spree came to an end around 7:10 PM when he crashed into a concrete barrier, broke one of the tank’s treads, and was fatally shot after refusing to surrender to police who pried open the tank’s hatch.
