On this day, a Roman emperor dedicated a new city that he hoped would rival Rome itself. On May 11, 330 A.D., Emperor Constantine the Great dedicated the city of Nova Roma, or New Rome, strategically located at the intersection of Europe and Asia along the Bosporus Strait. Although a small Greek city named Byzantium had previously stood on the site, Constantine decided in 324 to make the city his imperial residence and set about remaking it in the image of Rome. After six years of expansion and renovation, New Rome was finally ready, and Constantine dedicated the new city with a lavish celebration. Over the next few decades, New Rome would quickly eclipse the Old Rome in population, wealth, and importance. The only thing about the city that didn’t last was its name – people soon began to refer to New Rome as Constantinople, after the great emperor who built it.
