On this day, an ancient man emerged perfectly preserved from the mire. On May 8, 1950, two peat cutters discovered the corpse of a man in a bog near the town of Silkeborg, Denmark. The body was remarkably well-preserved and the men who discovered it initially thought they had found a recent murder victim, but radiocarbon dating revealed that the corpse was actually over 2300 years old! Tollund Man, as the body came to be known, had managed to stay intact due to the lack of oxygen and the perfect level of acidity in the bog, and the discovery of such an old and well-preserved corpse made international news. Scholars determined that Tollund man died by hanging somewhere around 405-380 BC. He was about 40 years old, and the positioning of his body caused experts to conclude that he was likely a human sacrifice, offered up to some unknown and ancient god.
