On this day, a beloved children’s show went out on the airwaves for the first time. On November 10, 1969, the first episode of Sesame Street aired on American public television stations. Co-created by Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrisett and featuring Muppets created by Jim Henson, Sesame Street was the first children’s TV program to employ a curriculum with clear educational outcomes in mind, and the first to conduct research to ensure its content was engaging for children. In addition to creating memorable characters like Elmo, Big Bird, and Oscar the Grouch, Sesame Street was also notable for employing a diverse cast of human characters and tackling difficult topics like race, death, and interpersonal conflict in a way that made sense for preschoolers. Even after 4,626 episodes, Sesame Street is still going strong and making a positive impact on the lives of millions of children today!
