On this day, an explorer in the vast expanse of the American West spotted the mountain that would one day bear his name. On November 15, 1806, Zebulon Pike’s expedition to the land that would eventually become the state of Colorado first sighted a huge mountain far off on the horizon. Like the more famous Lewis and Clark expedition, Pike’s expedition had been sent by President Jefferson to scout the land gained by the US in the Louisiana purchase, so Pike decided to map out the mountain and attempt to climb it if possible. While the attempt to climb it unsurprisingly failed, Pike noted the location of the great mountain, and after accidentally crossing into Mexico and being imprisoned by Spanish authorities, he returned home to fame and fortune as a prominent explorer. The mountain he encountered was named Pikes Peak in his honor, and it remains one of America’s most well-known and frequently visited mountains to this day.
