On this day, a messenger of victory fell from the heavens. On November 7, 1492, a meteorite fell from the sky and landed in a wheat field outside the town of Ensisheim in Alsace, then part of the Holy Roman Empire. On top of being the oldest preserved meteorite with a known date of impact, the Ensisheim meteorite also had a profound political impact. King Maximilian, the heir apparent of the Holy Roman Empire, decided that the meteorite was a good omen for his upcoming military campaign against France, and utilized it as propaganda with the help of the German poet Sebastian Brandt. Maximilian’s army swelled in number thanks to the good omen and then went on to prove that it was blessed by the heavens when it defeated a larger French army at the Battle of Senlis. Today, the 280 pound meteorite that inspired an army serves as the star attraction at the Ensisheim town museum.
