On this day, one of the greatest speeches ever was delivered. On November 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivered a short speech at the dedication of the Soldiers National Cemetery in Gettysburg which has come to be known as the Gettysburg Address. Despite popular misconceptions, Lincoln’s speech was far from the main event that day: it followed a two-hour long oration by Edward Everett on the Battle of Gettysburg. In addition, no one is quite sure what exactly Lincoln said, because he produced at least five different draft versions of the speech and all of the newspapers that reprinted it did so with serious variations. Nonetheless, it is broadly agreed that in less than two minutes, Lincoln managed to eloquently state his justification for the Civil War and honor the soldiers who truly consecrated the ground at Gettysburg with their sacrifices for a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.
