On this day, an astronomer published findings that proved the universe was far larger than it seemed. On November 23, 1924, Edwin Hubble published the first proof that the universe was made up of more than one galaxy. Prior to Hubble’s findings, scientists believed that the Milky Way galaxy represented the extent of the universe. Using the Hooker telescope at Mount Wilson Observatory in California, Hubble closely examined the so-called Andromeda “Nebula” and concluded based on the apparent luminosity of some of its stars that Andromeda was not a nebula, but in fact an entirely separate galaxy! In light of this breakthrough, other astronomers soon began confirming the existence of countless other galaxies in the night sky, each one just as inconceivably vast and teeming with stars as our own Milky Way. Mankind finally had its first real perspective on the size of the universe.
