On this day, one of the most infamous and dramatic unsolved crimes in American history occurred. On November 24, 1971, the man who would come to be known by the alias D.B. Cooper hijacked Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 305 from Portland to Seattle, extracted a $200,000 ransom from the airline when the plane landed in Seattle, and then parachuted somewhere into the Pacific Northwest with the money once the plane took off again. Despite a massive investigation conducted by the FBI, the only trace ever found of D.B. Cooper was a small part of the ransom money, which washed up in the Columbia River nine years after the crime occurred. Other than that, D.B. Cooper remains an enigma, and questions like who he was, what happened to the rest of the money, and whether he even survived his hazardous jump from the plane remain unsolved to this day, although countless amateur sleuths have their own theories.
