On this day, an unprepared Russian army bumbled into a disastrous war with one of its neighbors. On November 30, 1939, the Soviet Union invaded Finland, sparking the Winter War. The invasion came after months of Soviet pressure towards Finland to give up territory in order to secure the Soviets’ northern flank from a possible German invasion. Despite a massive advantage in manpower, tanks, and planes, the early war saw the Soviets suffer horrific losses to both enemy fire and frostbite and make very little progress against the spirited Finnish defenders. However, after a change in tactics the following February, the Soviets finally overcame key Finnish defenses and forced Finland to sue for peace. Despite the popular view of the Winter War as a miserable failure, the Soviets did manage to take roughly 9% of Finnish territory, which was more than they demanded at the start of the war.
