On this day, an extremely brave and insanely lucky soldier forced the surrender of an enemy battalion. On October 8, 1918, US Army Corporal Alvin York captured 128 German soldiers and 4 officers during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in WWI. York’s unit had infiltrated German lines to take out a machine gun nest when they began taking heavy fire from the enemy. When the other non-commissioned officers went down, York took command of the seven remaining soldiers and personally began fighting back from a very exposed position. Somehow, none of the bullets the Germans were pouring onto him managed to hit York, and he returned fire with deadly accuracy that convinced the German commander to surrender. Back home, this miraculous feat performed by a humble, religious man like York became a sensation for an American public eager to see their role in the war as a Holy Crusade, and York soon became a legendary war hero.
