A little side note, I've actually had this little gem among all the myraid of WiiWare's varied offerings since the week of its launch, back when I had a job instead of a steep education bill for a change of pace...these days, it's far less likely that I'm going to spend money all willy-nilly, so I really decided to take my time and go back to savor this one for a bit longer than I originally did.

Actually, it probably turns out for the best anyway, since fitting each part within ten minutes would be something of a challenge, so I'm glad that the new 15-and-30-seconds-ish upload limit will help keep things together that much more smoothly.

And of course, I feel that it's important to give proper credit where credit is due, because what really got me thinking about WiiWare at present was YouTuber octaneblue's coverage of another stellar offering from the download service: Jett Rocket. Seriously, go check it out, it's a pretty awesome game itself, albeit in a completely different genre.

WiiWare is wonderful when it works out well, so I believe that it's important to share with others when enjoyable titles with low price tags and surprisingly high production values crop up.

Seriously, there are some nice things in that half of the Wii Shop Channel! Something for everybody awaits! ...although on the flip side there's also a whole lot of stuff that's decidedly NOT for everybody, so it's naturally going to present a sort of mixed bag.

Mission 2: Hold the Line

If you weren't like me, trying out all the weapons in your one-man arsenal (Seriously, Levin, what's up with that? And how do you carry it all?!), this mission surely will give you the opportunity and will more than suffice as a good field test for your entire arsenal:

The assault rifle packs a pretty nice punch and still accurate over frankly insane distances.

The submachine gun has a very nice ammo clip and is great for crowd control and spraying over swathes of incoming swarms.

The shotgun is a real beauty at close range and comes in handy for both tightly-grouped clusters of enemies and pesky wasps that get too close and refuse to sit still long enough for another weapon.

The rocket launcher has a ridiculous explosive radius and a rather nifty homing aspect for moving targets...just don't expect whatever you aimed at to die quickly, but do expect anything unlucky enough to be standing too close to have a bad day, too.

The laser whip is a valuable tool for getting yourself out of a tough scrape, because it almost surely destroys any target in a single hit (although some nests will take several hits before going down) and the best part of all, which surprisingly isn't mentioned by the game itself: no bug juice on your visor! It has a limited number of uses before it must recharge, but basically it will never permanently run out.

And last but not least, the grenades...I'm really not a fan, because the throwing sensitivity is clearly not calibrated for my hands...I either end up throwing it on my own foot or way off past the targets I was aiming for. Oh well. Sometimes I get what I want, I just try not to rely on these too much.

Anyway, there are two ways to win this mission, you last the entire duration without a bug slipping by, or you destroy all their hives. I've done both ways, but lasting the whole six minutes is really the more satisfying option...and it gives your kills and combo bonuses a nice boost. I generally hold the meager time bonus in the lowest possible regard anyhow, since just blowing away cyborgs will get you more than enough points to compensate you for your time.

I will say that wiping out the far right nest where the grasshopper type enemies emerge periodically does tend to give you some much-needed breathing room...so I did wipe out that nest myself.

Of interesting note, and something that took me a while to pick up on...if you shoot a nest that hasn't been triggered in a while, it will spawn a group of enemies in response...sometimes this can be a good thing for extending a combo or getting more enemies to pad your score, but in this case it's just a side-effect of trying to be rid of a single source of enemies for the rest of the mission.
