Open Innovation Unleashed: Obeo's Journey in the Open-Source Ecosystem - OCX 2024
Since its inception in 2006, Obeo has become a pivotal player in the open-source modeling tools community, leading innovative projects, fostering vibrant communities, and making significant contributions to the ecosystem. This talk will delve into Obeo's journey from a small team of three founders to a global enterprise with over 60 employees, providing valuable insights into the dynamics of open-source communities and the successful business models that support them. We'll explore our unique business model which relies on open innovation. By investing in open-source projects and channeling funds from large corporations to evolve and adapt these initiatives, we've developed a sustainable model that benefits the community, our commercial interests, and the end-users. This hybrid approach—combining development services with commercial add-ons and software assurance—has facilitated the widespread adoption of products like Eclipse Capella, Eclipse Sirius, and many others. Over the past 18 years, we've cultivated a mutually beneficial economic model that ensures the longevity and evolution of open-source projects. User companies finance these advancements, which in turn leads to improvements that benefit the entire community. In 2023, more than 30% of Obeo's development efforts were dedicated to open-source software. We'll cover the dynamics of open-source communities and how, as an enterprise organization, we tackle the challenges and leverage the opportunities within these communities. Our experience shows that fostering strong, collaborative relationships and maintaining a transparent, inclusive approach are key to driving innovation and achieving long-term success. But how can you pioneer when covering the base functionalities requires you to develop a platform representing thousands of days of development? We'll highlight our recent initiatives to pioneer web-based modeling tools and the development of a platform significantly reducing the cost and complexity of web modeling tools: Sirius Web. This platform is now enabling the emergence of transformative modeling products such as Papyrus Web and Eclipse SysON for SysMLv2. Join us to learn how Obeo has successfully balanced commercial success with a deep commitment to open-source principles, driving innovation and fostering a thriving global community.
