Opening Hour: SkateBIRD (Xbox Series X)
0I've had my eye on SkateBIRD for many years now, and today it came out as a day one release on Xbox Game Pass. A skateboarding game featuring birds as the skaters, what could go wrong? It turns out quite a bit can go wrong. Most importantly, the game is just not that fun to play. I like looking at the birds and customizing them with little outfits and hats, that's good stuff. The opening level inside a person's bedroom is fairly creative, and has some neat gimmicks. I can even get behind the twee dialogue. The problem is when you actually start skating you realize that the actual game is just plain bad. Everything about it "feels" wrong. I wasn't expecting Tony Hawk necessarily but this is a frustrating mess. It's floaty and unresponsive, which is the exact thing a game about skateboarding cannot be. Check it out on game pass if you like the look, but just know what you're getting into.
SkateBIRD is described on Steam as follows: "Grind on bendy straws, kickflip over staplers, and carve killer lines through cardboard and sticky tape parks. Above all else, skate birds try their best!"
