After an underwhelming release to theaters in the Summer of 1995 (despite it being the most successful film of the year prior to Toy Story, specifically due to how it grossed roughly half of what The Lion King made), Pocahontas was an equal disappointment on Home Video when it was released in 1996, selling only 8.5 million copies in North America. The underwhelming sales began to make people in the company wonder if this would be their first truly "dud" year.
