After it's dreadful release in theaters in 1985, many in the upper brass in Disney saw no need to release it's "worst animated film" to home video. However, the film became increasingly popular due to film schools and a small amount of merchandise sales in Disneyland. This convinces Disney to release The Black Cauldron to home video in the late summer of 1995, and the film sold quite well for what it was, selling roughly 4.8 million copies in the US.
