Operon systems are common in prokaryotes. In lac operon, three enzymes are necessary for the metabolism of lactose. The addition of lactose allows the production of these enzymes. The operon is commonly found in catabolic pathways. Operon is active and transcribed at high levels when glucose is absent. A very low level of expression of operon and consequently its enzymes is always present. Lac repressor in operon act as as a lactose sensor. It normally blocks transcription of the operon, but stops acting as repressor when lactose is present.
