Optical Switches Explained
137One of the fancy new features you’ll find on the higher end or niche keyboards is optical keyswitches. Mechanical key switches work by mechanically moving a bit of springy metal and either making or breaking an electrical connection. That feels great, but they wear out over time and the springy metal likes to bounce which means keyboards have to delay sending any inputs so they can be sure what you actually pressed. Optical switches on the other hand use beams of light which aren't springy, so reacts much faster. There’s also less to wear out. Some use fancy mirrors or even magnets to know how far you’ve pressed the key which lets you do some really cool features like change how far you have to press for it to register - maybe you only want to nudge it while gaming for lightning fast reactions, but for typing you want to smack those keys. Some even let you have multiple actions per key at different heights!
