Over G Fighters • Xenia Update - Better Image Quality
Recent Xenia update adds multiple post-processing effects that improve image fidelity and provide high-quality upscaling at a low, or even near-zero, performance cost!
The gorgeous and magical AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 1.0, also known as FSR, brings super high-quality edge-preserving and sharpness-restoring upscaling from 720p (or even below, in games not rendering at 720p internally) to the resolutions of modern monitors (even with scaling ratios larger than 2x2 as Xenia performs multiple upsampling passes in this case) with almost no performance impact — and for near-native visual quality with moderate performance costs, you can combine FSR with the recently added 1x2 and 2x1 rendering resolution scaling factors!
NVIDIA Fast Approximate Anti-Aliasing 3.11 — FXAA — is another post-processing filter that is now available in Xenia, which eliminates jagged edges in the image, and can be used to supplement the game’s built-in anti-aliasing or even as an anti-aliasing solution when the game doesn’t have one. It is especially important when FSR is active to make sure FSR has smooth edges to work with and won’t be making the jaggies even more visible.
AMD FidelityFX Contrast Adaptive Sharpening, or CAS, also can increase the sharpness of the image, and make it more consistently sharp throughout the screen. It automatically replaces FSR when upscaling is not needed, but optionally can be used for slight upscaling as well.
(Note: all these effects work on all graphics cards! You can use FSR/CAS on NVIDIA and FXAA on AMD graphics cards, as well as on Intel GPUs!)
Variable Refresh Rate displays — AMD FreeSync, NVIDIA G-SYNC and VESA Adaptive-Sync — are also now supported in fullscreen mode to reduce the presentation latency and to stabilize frame pacing, primarily on monitors with refresh rates that are not a multiple of 30 Hz (such as 144 Hz).
Other additions include dithering to smoothen subtle gradients, as well as proper support for high DPI displays, with Dear ImGui automatically scaled, and no more one pixel border with certain DPI scaling factors.
You can read more about the additions, as well as see more comparison screenshots, in the detailed blog post about the update: https://xenia.jp/updates/2022/01/29/presenting-the-presentation-update-amd-fidelityfx-fsr-fxaa-cas-vrr.html
The post-processing settings menu can be opened by pressing F6, or Display - Post-processing settings.
The new version can be downloaded at https://github.com/xenia-project/release-builds-windows/releases/latest/download/xenia_master.zip. Note that the old AppVeyor download link may now be unavailable due to the issues with the download quota — builds are now hosted as GitHub Releases in a special repository at https://github.com/xenia-project/release-builds-windows/releases — but you can always find the up-to-date download link in links-and-related-servers or on the Xenia website — https://xenia.jp/download/
