Ozone layer is present in the earths atmosphere and shields the surface of the earth from ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the Sun. There is bad ozone formed in the lower atmosphere (troposphere) that harms plants and animals and also good ozone found in the upper part of the atmosphere called the stratosphere. It contains three oxygen atoms \( \left(\mathrm{O}_{3}\right) \) which are formed as a consequence of photochemical reactions in the environment. This radiation is highly damaging to organisms, for example, it is known to cause skin cancer in human beings. Ozone absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiations of the sun. In this way, it protects all living beings on the earth. The thinning of ozone layer due to various human activities allow more UV radiations to pass through it which leads to harmful effects on man, animals and plants. The amount of ozone in the atmosphere began to drop sharply in the 1980s. This decrease has been linked to synthetic chemicals like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which are used as refrigerants and in fire extinguishers.
